Blackjack Theme — Brutalist Engineering Docs for Enterprise

Headline

New: Blackjack theme for enterprise workspaces. Zero ornamentation. Monospace-dominant body. Amber signal accents. The docs site that reads like a man page.

Overview

Blackjack is a WHITE-tier premium theme for Choco docs outposts. It’s designed for technical teams that demand clarity over decoration — think API documentation, runbooks, system architecture — written in monospace with a single accent color for critical callouts. Visual signature:
  • Palette: Near-black ink (#0B0C0D), amber signal accent (#FFB547), off-white highlights
  • Typography: Fraunces serif for display (H1 only), JetBrains Mono for everything else
  • Density: Tight spacing, zero radius corners, linear motion, no animation
  • Ornamentation: Sharp edges, hairline rules, amber left-borders on asides, static (never blinking) active indicators

What’s New

Blackjack brings a fifth premium theme to the WHITE tier (enterprise), joining Licorice, Violet Crumble, Humbug, and Rock Candy. New workspace admins at WHITE tier now have 5 choices instead of 4:

Design Narrative

Inspiration: POSIX man pages, BSD documentation, old-school technical writing. Blackjack strips away every non-essential visual element:
  • No scanlines. (Licorice has them; Blackjack is clean.)
  • No decorative borders. Rules appear only where they serve structure (H2/H3 top borders, table gridlines, aside left-borders).
  • No blinking or animation. Sidebar active indicators are a static amber dot, not a pulsing cursor.
  • No brackets around inline code. Code appears in an amber box; no [decoration].
  • Mono first. 85% of the page is monospace (headings, body, inline code). Serif only on H1.
The philosophy: Every visual choice must earn its pixels.

Technical Details

  • CSS tokens: 11 custom properties (--bj-*)
  • CSS variable bridge: Full 21-variable Starlight compatibility
  • Light mode support: Minimal CSS inversion (bone background, ink text, amber preserved)
  • Font stack: Fraunces (serif, H1) + JetBrains Mono (everything else)
  • Component coverage: Headings, asides, links, inline code, tables, sidebar, footer

How to Use

For workspace admins (WHITE tier):
  1. Navigate to site settings.
  2. Open the theme picker.
  3. Click Blackjack (now available, marked WHITE tier).
  4. Apply.
For docs teams:
  • Recommend Blackjack for: API reference docs, CLI tool runbooks, system architecture specs, technical handbooks.
  • Avoid for: Marketing sites, hero pages, brand showcases (other themes are better).

GTM Angles

Angle 1: “Docs that read like engineering”

Blackjack brings the visual aesthetic of POSIX man pages to your docs outpost. No distractions. Monospace body. Amber highlights for critical information. Your docs are engineering, not marketing—now they look like it.

Angle 2: “Premium theming at scale”

Enterprise workspaces now have 5 visually distinct premium themes. Rotate themes across documentation domains—API docs in Blackjack, guides in Violet Crumble, archives in Humbug. Mix and match without leaving Choco.

Angle 3: “Dark mode engineering”

Need dark? Blackjack is brutalist dark-only (no light toggle). If you want dark that respects your engineer’s eyes, this is it. (Light mode fallback is available; just austere.)

Compatibility

  • Starlight version: 0.30+
  • Light mode: Yes (minimal CSS inversion)
  • Dark mode: Yes (primary mode)
  • Accessibility: WCAG AA compliant (body text 4.5:1 contrast on background, accent text 3:1)
  • Mobile/responsive: Full support (Starlight base handles breakpoints)

Release Status

  • Availability: Live, available to WHITE-tier workspaces immediately
  • Cost: Included in WHITE tier (no upcharge)
  • Support: Full integration with Choco admin UI, theme picker, workspace settings

Quote (Internal)

“Blackjack is what happens when you ask ‘what if our docs looked like a technical specification manual, not a website?’ The answer is: brutalist, monospace-dominant, zero animations, and somehow more readable.” — Engineering Lead, Choco

  • Customer feedback (qualitative: does Blackjack resonate with API-heavy or engineering-heavy docs?)
  • Churn impact (do WHITE customers stay longer with more theme choices?)
